A puppy mill is a large-scale commercial dog breeding operation where profit is given priority over the well-being of the dogs. Unlike responsible breeders, who place the utmost importance on producing the healthiest puppies possible, breeding at puppy and kitten mills is performed without consideration of genetic quality. This results in generations of dogs with unchecked hereditary defects.
Puppy mill puppies are typically sold to pet shops and marketed as young as six weeks of age. All records of puppy mill dogs are often falsified.

Clearly written and really insightful. I am thankful you took the time to publish this since it was really helpful.
Oprah Winfrey made a big exposee on Puppy Mills in America. We should do the same here in South Africa. It is unforgiveable how these animals are treated. We cannot keep up with the dogs that are being produced. The pro-life organisations are not coping with the volumes of dogs. Wake up South Africa we need to treat the cause – not the symptoms!@!.
I wish we could get this out there!
I see people in pet shops buying dogs on a whim because they look cute. They don’t put any more thought into buying a puppy than they do into buying a pair of designer shoes. These puppies then inevitably land up being abandoned- Just two weeks ago at the SPCA I saw 4 pure bred daschunds and 2 pure bred scottish terriers as well as a year old yorkie and a 10 month old toy pom.
I find it excruciating to walk into pet shops and to be confronted with the commercialisation of lives.
I hate supporting these shops at all- with buying dog beds and shampoos etc.
I always spread the word about adopting rescue dogs and I have personally rehomed 8 unwanted dogs in the past 6 months.
We can all exert influence, even in the quitest way.
I will never support a breeder- to me they are the root of evil.
