Comment:

Randy is a survivor, feisty and courageous and extremely loyal. He has loads of energy and was jumping around excitedly while waiting for the inspector’s attention. Randy is fine with certain dogs, especially if off lead in an exercise area. Dogs on lead may often be more assertive as they have a human to protect them.

So when introducing dogs, choose a neutral area such as a park, drop the leads, keep calm and allow the dogs to interact in their own time. Keep moving away from the dogs; do not let any dog ‘own’ you by touching you, standing behind your legs or at your side. Ignore minor snarls or growls – these indicate that the dogs are sorting out their roles in the pack. But if you notice the signs of serious aggression, ie hackles rising on the dog’s back, lips curling and snarling, quickly distract the dogs by strong verbal warnings, [Cool it, guys!] or clapping your hands while walking away.  If really necessary grab the leads and quietly remove the dogs. Do not yell or flap your arms around as this will only serve to aggravate the situation. Most dogs enjoy the company of other dogs, they just need to learn how to behave – and this they learn from each other.
