Zim cancels North Korean animal shipment

http://animals-in-the-news.blogspot.com/2010/06/zimbabwe-verscheept-geen-wilde-dieren.html

SW Africa Radio -  22 June 2010
Zim cancels North Korean animal shipment amid condemnation.
By Alex Bell, SW Radio Africa news

The government has cancelled its plans to send a shipment of wild animals to North Korea, amid intense international condemnation of the deal. The plan, handed down by Robert Mugabe in a reported Presidential Decree last month, was to send a number of different species of animal found in the Hwange National Park, to North Korea. This included two young elephants, giraffe, jackal, zebra, catfish, civet, blue monkey and spotted hyena. Wildlife authorities originally denied that any such deal had taken place, despite numerous animals being captured and placed in quarantine ahead of the scheduled journey.

Authorities eventually confirmed that the plan was a trade deal with the North Koreans, worth an estimated US$23 000. Conservationists and international pressure groups reacted with outrage and anger, with no guarantees being made by Zimbabwean authorities about the welfare of the animals.

Animal welfare groups decried conditions in North Korea as ‘uninhabitable’ for African mammals, and for weeks the government faced pressure to call off the deal. 50 organisations, including wildlife welfare organisation Born Free, eventually joined together to protest the plan of what was dubbed the ‘ark of death’. The group said they were fearful that the capture, transport and incarceration of these wild animals in North Korea “will lead, for many of the animals, to an untimely and entirely unnecessary death.”

A letter, endorsed by the 50 groups, was also send to Zimbabwean authorities, calling for, in particular, the practice of elephant capture to be abolished. The deal has now been called off, after scientists reportedly concluded that the animals bound for North Korea would not adjust to conditions there.

Johnny Rodrigues from the Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force, which has led calls for the sale of
Zimbabwe’s wildlife to be stopped completely, told SW Radio Africa that this is only a small victory. “We still have at least five other countries who have put in their orders for wildlife, and many animals from the North Korean shipment are still being sold,” Rodrigues explained.

He added: “These animals are Zimbabwe’s. They are our heritage and we should be united in protecting them from these kinds of sales.”

The Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart. Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together….

STATE VERSUS JAN VAN AARDT PUPPYMILL COURTCASE FEEDBACK

It has been over a year again with this current court case and due to many postponements we still have not proceeded to trial in this matter.  The second trial date of five days was set down to start on Monday 5 July 2010 in the Magistrates court of Pretoria North.  The State and witnesses had been consulted and we were ready to start the trial.  However Jan van Aardt was not available and had a doctor’s note and a warrant for his arrest was issued by the court, but it has been held over until the 13th July whereby he will appear and then a new trial date will be set.  As this case has been moved between various prosecutors it has been a sad reality that during this timeframe evidence, affidavits and documents have strangely disappeared from the docket.  However we suspected something to this effect and fortunately had backup copies.  We will keep you posted on this case.

MUFFIN COURT CASE FEEDBACK

After fifteen (15) court appearances the case has again been postponed for judgement and sentencing to the 6th August 2010 in the Pretoria Magistrates court.  This case has been ongoing now for over two years.  We trust that justice will prevail in this case for Muffin and that he will receive the victory he deserves after the horrendous suffering he endured in this lifetime.

FEEDBACK ON RESCUE CASES DURING JUNE 2010

Wet Nose Animal Rescue Centre is a registered “right to life” organisation that is involved in the rehabilitation of abandoned, neglected and abused animals. Healthy animals in our care are not put to sleep; they stay with us until they can get a new home.

This past month we have had a few serious rescue cases that really just shows us once again that all animals deserve a second chance in life and that we can provide it to them with the best possible care and with lots of undivided love and attention thanks to the support from all our animal loving public. Unfortunately with each case the veterinarian costs are extremely high and being a non profit organisation we rely solely on donations from the kind and caring public.  We need your help to cover these costs please!

  • Oubaas” –12 yrs of age Staffie x.

On the 22nd of May our inspector received a call from a member of the public requesting assistance with a dog that they saw lying between the Hotel and Spar in Cullinan. He was allegedly bitten by someone’s dogs the previous night and chased out of the premises.

On arrival the poor old man was petrified and in serious pain, he had a gaping wound on his fore head and numerous other wounds on his body.  On the way back to Wet Nose everything was being sorted so that on arrival this poor old man could get all our undivided attention and loving care. The wounds were cleaned; he was given some medication for pain and placed in the isolation ward. It was a very critical 24 hours for “Oubaas” and the staff that helped with him.

“Oubaas” was taken to the veterinarian to be examined as the wounds on his fore head appeared to be very serious. The veterinarian was concerned about the head wound and at one stage wanted to humanely euthanase the dog due to his age and the wounds. Being Wet Nose we knew that “Oubaas” definitely deserved a second chance in life and we managed to pull him through. He is now become an office dog as he does not want to sleep in a kennel; he decided that the heater and pillows was much better for his old age. He is a sweet, gentle and loving soul who even at his old age learned to behave, listen and is now house trained! (And then people say that old dogs cannot learn new tricks!!)

  •  “Zena” a 9 month old female Chow x

On a warm and sunny day in September 2009, a little puppy was brought to the Wet Nose Animal Rescue Centre as unwanted; the puppy was cute and fluffy but had a skin condition. She was treated and the skin problems disappeared.
“Zena” turned out to be the most loving, friendly dog. As she grew older it was noted that she appeared to have problems with her hind legs, she was x-rayed and nothing abnormal was found.  On a later stage we took her to another veterinarian who x-rayed her hind legs again and discovered that she had abnormity with both her hind legs, if we did not operate on her soon she would have had to be humanely euthanased due to pain and possible other complications. The running cost for her operation was R4000. We believe Zena was worth this as this is what we stand for and went ahead with the operation to assist her.  We are pleased to let you know that Zena has recovered exceptionally well from the operation and we are hoping to have her back at Wet Nose after her bed rest as she is still in the care of the veterinarian that operated on her to ensure no complications.

  • “Piksie” 1 year old male Jack Russell cross

“Piksie” was collected by our inspector along with 2 other Jack Russell’s from a farm in Boschkop after the owner decided that they did not want the dogs anymore and left them behind. After a week in our care we noticed a small lump on the side of his face, the veterinarians examined him and it was found that a “burrow” tick made himself comfortable in his neck. This tick causes major tissue damage resulting in dead skin that must be removed. The running costs so far on this shy but loving pup is between R3500 – R4500 as they must change his bandages twice a day with new ones to ensure that there is no infection as this would have serious implications. We have just heard the good news that “Pixie” will be coming back home to Wet Nose tomorrow.

  • “Cleopatra” 4.5 year old female Greyhound

On the 18th of June 2010, a member of the public rushed into our offices covered in blood, she informed us that she had a Greyhound that came to her premises and was attacked by her dogs, the dog then tried to escape by jumping over 1.8 metre palisade fencing with added electric fencing on the top. The people managed to switch off the electric fencing but could not stop the dog from jumping. She jumped and got her front legs stuck on the palisades, just missing a main artery but damaging her tendons.  She was rushed through to the veterinarians and they had their hands full in trying to stop the blood loss and in saving her live.

“Cleopatra” is typical of her breed; she is a gentle, loving and sweet natured girl that wants to preferably sleep on the couch next to you than being outside or in a kennel. She is still under treatment at the vet but it is an absolute joy to work with. Her name suits her perfect as she is like the historical “Cleopatra” one beautiful and charmed lady! She knows exactly how to get her way by using her feminine powers…

These are just some of the cases we have been handling besides our day to day expenses and vet bills for sterilisations etc and we really felt that these special cases needed the medical care they deserved and have been given.  As you can see by the estimated costs these will be difficult to recover without help from the public.  Should you wish to make a donation in aid of these special cases it would be greatly appreciated. CURRENT COURTCASE OF THE BOERBOEL CROSS PENDING –(not for sensitive viewers)  THE REALITY OF ANIMAL WELFARE INSPECTORATE.

At times we need to show you the reality of what our inspectors deal with daily, some people think that animal welfare is just a job, but it is not that simple. It is a passion that you eat, sleep and live 24 hours a day. We see horrendous cases on a daily basis that visions will never leave our subconscious mind and constantly haunt us even years later.
Inspector Le roux handled this case over a year and a half  ago and we are still awaiting a court date even after numerous phone calls and follow ups; This beautiful Boerboel was left to die by his owner who refused to obtain medical treatment.  The boerboel was rushed to the local vet who fought feverishly to save him as time was against him.  Massive infections were present and had already turned septic.  Despite all the efforts and the treatment we lost him.

SHEEP ATTACKED BY NEIGHBOURS DOGS

Our inspector was called out to the scene by the police in need of our assistance.  The scene that met us was heartbreaking.  Many sheep in the enclosure had been attacked and mauled by the neighbour’s dogs.  There was nothing we could do for many of them except alleviate them from the suffering and severe pain as they were busy dying a slow death.  There were only three that we could try and save by working fast and we rushed them to the vet.  We are thankful that even with their severe injuries they survived.   The two dogs in question were also lying in the kraal as they had been shot by the owner, but they were not dead and we managed to save them as well.  After thorough investigation it turned out to be a conflict between the neighbours and the animals were the ones that took the brunt sadly.

FERAL CAT THOUGHTS

I sit beneath the bushes as she fills my dish each day,
I only venture out to eat when she has gone away,
I know it will upset her when I turn away and hide,
As every day she tries her best to get me by her side.
I wish that I could let her know that I don’t want to run,
And hope that she will understand it’s nothing that She’s done.
I’d like to have her stroke me and pat my weary head,
But fear will overcome and I’ll run and hide instead.
For all the kindly people who feed the strays each day,
I pray the Lord will care for them as they have cared for me.

MUFFIN – THE GENTLE GIANT- THE COURT CASE MOVES TO AN END

The long drawn out court case of precious Muffin whereby Wet Nose instituted charges of animal abuse and neglect under the Animal Protections Act 71 of 1962 against his former owner Nico van der Merwe, when we rescued Muffin at deaths door on 6 May 2008 is nearing an end eventually.

Nico van der Merwe pleaded not guilty to the charges and after 14 (FOURTEEN) COURT APPEARANCES  eventually on the 14th April 2010 arguments were heard and on the 9th June 2010 judgement and sentencing will be handed down in the Pretoria North Magistrates Court.

Muffin was awarded the ISAR/ Wet Nose international award for his strength, perseverance, loyalty and the WILL TO LIVE in August 2008.  But the abuse had taken its toll on Muffins body and on the 6 February 2009 Muffin bid us farewell in his home surrounded by his family and the Wet Nose rescuers at his side. This spectacular dog’s story touched people’s hearts all around the world and he reminded us the valuable lesson of loyalty and love and to stand up for what we believe in and speak for those that cannot speak for themselves.

It has been a year since we lost our precious friend and companion and his Spirit will live on inside us all forever and we promised Muffin we would fight for his justice.  Wet Nose believes that justice will be served and that Muffin will get the justice he is due.

Thank you all for your support.

Reminder:  The PUPPY MILL  case will proceed to trial after a previous postponement in Pretoria North magistrate’s court on the 1- 5 July 2010.  We need all your prayers and support in this case.

Lucky Lucy update

Greetings to all mutt-maniacs!

‘Twas the month after Christmas (give or take), and all through the Cape all the dog lovers were going ape.  People have been talking, writing, reading, eating, sleeping, gnawing and Facebooking Lucky Lucy – our heroic little hound who was found tied to the railway tracks in Wellington. Discovered by Richelle and Andre – who run our Hound Haven in Klapmuts – Lucy had already been run over by at least one train, and one of her front legs had unfortunately been torn off. But luckily, Richelle and Andre were in the right place and the right time, and luck was on Lucy’s side. Almost two weeks later, she is making remarkable progress, having had her leg properly amputated and treated. She now spends her days rehabilitating at the Hound Haven, where she follows Richelle around like a (very grateful) shadow and enjoys her homecoming gifts from Eukenuba, Rogz, Royal Canin, Purina and all the other kind donors and supporters (for which she sends a big, face-licking thank you ). Her tail is already wagging and she’s putting her three feet forward for the future on long walk to freedom, as the father of our nation did 20 years ago on this day!

Many people have come forward to adopt Lucy, but she has been adopted by her rescuer Richelle. Meanwhile, there are many other marvellous mutts who have their own heartwarming stories to tell and their own dreams of a loving home to call their own
